Yinka Ilori

Take it in and take time

Role: Project Management for Company, Place

Artist/Designer:

Curator:

Client: Argent

Location: Tottenham Hale, London, UK

Date: 2021

Curated and commissioned by Company, Place, 'Take it in and take time' by Yinka Ilori MBE was an installation of temporary, reusable, street furniture consisting of seating, planters and a bespoke clock.  This work was the second in a series of public realm interventions for Heart of Hale, the design of each installation aimed to bring life and joy to a space in progress, a space in disruption.

In this series of commissions, Ilori fused the old and the new through a colour palette inspired by the local area’s colours and the diverse range of wildlife found around the River Lea.  Ilori's work often uses colour, material finishes and patterns to turn something forgotten or unassuming into an object of great beauty.  'Take it in and take time' was no exception, transforming reclaimed manhole rings into seating, planters and a base for a new pillar clock. Installed on an underutilised corner, the site immediately became a stopping spot for morning coffee drinkers and late-night clubbers.

The manhole rings created a modular street furniture system; designed with a space that is in flux in mind, they could be stacked and re-situated to brighten up future shared spaces as the site moves through the development phases.  The clock was specified for future permanent installation, to act as a focal and meeting point in the completed public realm.
