Queer City
The Caravan Club
The Caravan Club, once billed as the capital’s greatest bohemian rendezvous, was recreated for the National Trust and National Archives ‘Queer City’ project.
The recreated club, with photographs, police records and letters on display, was in what is now the Freud cafe-bar – not the exact spot but very close. It was one of a number of events being held across the UK to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act, the landmark moment which decriminalised private homosexual acts between men over 21 in England and Wales.
As well as recreating the space, it was programmed by a variety of Queer performers for the 3 weeks.
